If you're planning a wedding, someone has probably already asked you: indoor or outdoor?
And if you're like most couples I work with, you've gone back and forth on it more than once. You love the idea of saying your vows outside under the trees, but then you start thinking about the heat in July, or what happens if it rains, or whether your grandparents are going to be comfortable sitting outside for an hour.
Here's what I've learned after producing hundreds of weddings at The Chapel at Dragonfly Farms in the Arkansas River Valley: the couples who stress the least about this decision are the ones who book a venue that gives them options instead of locking them into one.
It's a Preference, Not a Commitment
I've had couples tour the property absolutely certain they wanted an indoor ceremony in The Chapel, then fall in love with The Ceremony Grove the moment they saw it. I've had others come in planning a full outdoor celebration and decide during their planning process that the Pavilion made more sense for their guest list.
Both of those are completely fine. We're happy to accommodate changes in advance or at the last minute. The venue should work around the couple, not the other way around.
There's no right or wrong answer here. Some couples prioritize the atmosphere they've pictured in their heads for years. Others prioritize their guests' comfort, especially if they have older family members or young kids in the mix. Some want the romance of an outdoor ceremony and the practicality of a covered reception. Some want everything under one roof.
All of those are good decisions. The important thing is having a venue that supports whatever you choose, and that can pivot if you change your mind.
The Outdoor Spaces
Our property sits on five acres in Dover, Arkansas, in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. There are two outdoor ceremony options, and they feel very different from each other.
The Ceremony Grove is our largest outdoor space and can accommodate groups of any size. It's framed by towering pine trees and anchored by a gorgeous custom stone arch with The Chapel visible in the background. There's a stone path that leads from The Bridal Cottage directly to the crystal-inlaid ceremony site, so the bridal entrance is built right into the landscape. Custom stone benches line both sides for guest seating, and the whole space has a layered, storybook quality that's hard to capture in photos.
This is where most of our outdoor ceremonies happen. It's dramatic, it photographs beautifully, and it has the room to hold a crowd without ever feeling cramped.
The Gazebo is a completely different experience. It's more intimate, more personal, and ideal for smaller ceremonies or couples who want something quieter. It sits on its own in a wide open lawn, set apart from the other ceremony spaces, which gives it a private, unhurried feel. For elopements or ceremonies with just your closest people, it's hard to beat.
The Indoor Spaces
The Chapel is the heart of the property. It's the original 1882 structure with original wood floors, original walls, two standing columns, and a 1904 upright piano. There's a warmth to it that's hard to describe until you're standing inside, something about the wood and the light and the history of the building that just feels right. Couples who choose an indoor ceremony here often tell me they didn't need a single decoration because the space already felt complete.
The Pavilion is our open-air covered space, and it's probably the most versatile spot on the property. Vaulted wood-beamed ceiling, Edison bulb cafe lights, stone patio, high-velocity fans for summer, and permanently installed radiant heaters for cooler months. Optional vinyl sidewalls let you fully enclose it when weather demands it. Most of our receptions happen here, but it works just as well for ceremonies, especially if you want the feel of being outside without the exposure.
What About Weather?
This is the question that comes up most, and I get it. Weather in the Arkansas River Valley can turn on you in a hurry, and anyone who's lived here knows that.
I had a bride and groom earlier this year who were completely committed to an outdoor ceremony in The Ceremony Grove. It rained all morning, right up until their ceremony time. They didn't flinch. The rain cut out just minutes before the ceremony was set to begin, and they got their outdoor wedding exactly the way they planned it.
That story could have gone the other way, and if it had, we were ready to move everything into The Chapel with almost no notice. That's happened before, more than once, and guests never knew it wasn't the original plan.
The point isn't to let weather dictate the decision you make months in advance. The point is to book somewhere that has a real answer for what happens if the forecast doesn't cooperate, not a tent rental or a hope-for-the-best approach, but an actual space that's already set up and already beautiful.
That peace of mind changes the entire planning experience. Instead of checking the forecast every day for a month, you can just look forward to your wedding.
You Don't Have to Choose Just One
Something a lot of couples don't realize until they tour is that you're not locked into using one space for everything. Your ceremony can be in The Grove and your reception in The Pavilion. Your ceremony can be in The Chapel and your cocktail hour on the patio. You can say your vows under The Gazebo and then move everyone inside for dinner.
The property is five acres with stone pathways connecting everything, so guests transition naturally from one area to the next without it ever feeling disjointed.
And regardless of where your ceremony or reception takes place, photos can be taken anywhere on the property. Couples regularly use all four ceremony spaces, the stone pathways, The Bridal Cottage porch, the vintage vehicles, and the surrounding Ozark landscape for portraits and group shots throughout the day. Booking your ceremony in The Chapel doesn't mean you miss out on outdoor photos, and booking in The Grove doesn't mean you can't get shots inside.
You get the whole property, so use it however you want.
What Actually Drives the Decision
I've been watching couples make this choice for years, and there's really no pattern to it. Fall weddings are our most popular season because Arkansas fall foliage out here in the Ozarks is genuinely hard to beat, and even those split almost evenly between indoor and outdoor ceremonies. Winter couples choose outdoor spaces. Summer couples choose The Chapel. It's entirely personal.
The couples who feel best about their decision are usually the ones who visited the property, walked each space, and went with the one that felt right to them in the moment rather than the one they saw on Pinterest or the one someone else suggested. Most couples know within a few minutes of walking the grounds which space is theirs.
If you haven't toured the property yet, that's the single best thing you can do. Every space feels different in person than it does in photos.
